With a face only a mother could love … of course the face comes off with the rest of their body, leaving those ugly “shells” hooked on rosebushes – ugh. We haven’t got any and I’m not sure we will be part of the surge. You did a great job with this photo Linda.
They’re coming…

They’re already here – in droves.

The last giant brood in the DC area killed entire trees and was louder than a 747 (my sister broke out the noise monitor).

Yikes. Fortunately, these aren’t overly loud. It’s more of a low-level, continuous background noise.

I stand corrected. The correct name for a group of cicadas is a “brood.”

That seems more accurate, although I feel like a swarm would have better alliteration?

It’s a “periodical cicada.” They are currently singing the song of their people all through the woods right now.

Huh. We get cicadas, but usually in the middle of summer. Lucky you.

It is certainly a colorful little fellow…or fellowette.βOne year here they were so loud it was downright annoying in a rhythmic kind of way!

These don’t have that rhythmic ebb and flow of sound. It’s more like a constant low-level drone.

They haven’t emerged here yet, but I believe it could happen any day now.

My hubby gets all the credit for this photo. The cicada hitched a ride on his tractor for a while.
