Ally Bean at THE SPECTACLED BEAN writes an entertaining blog featuring miscellaneous topics, thought-provoking questions, and links to a variety of quizzes. One of her posts included a link to a quiz to determine your home decorating aesthetic. (I was going to link directly to the post, but I couldn’t find it. Sorry, Ally!) To no great surprise, the quiz determined that my aesthetic is Farmhouse Chic.
The rustic nature of The Cabin is one of the reasons I fell in love with it. Our first viewing of this house is my only experience of love at first sight. (Okay, maybe that’s not true. Any random kitten provokes a similar feeling.) Not long ago, I realized that I may be leaning a little heavily on the “farm” portion of Farmhouse Chic. I told Kenn, “I may owe you an apology. I seem to have decorated the whole house with cows.” (Hobby Lobby feeds into my bovine obsession.)
My love of cows traces back to my childhood. I grew up living next door to my maternal grandparents. My grandmother was a bit of a hobby farmer and always had a few cows. Growing up around cows is how I learned that the saying “Curiosity killed the cat” should actually be ” Curiosity killed the cow.” Cows are nothing if not nosy. Stand in the middle of a field of cows and it won’t be long until you’re surrounded by cows checking to see what you’re doing.
Now for a peek at my “bovine chic.”

What’s your decorating style?
Your cow collection is so fun and it’s sweet that they remind you of your grandmother. My house is a hodgepodge of hand-me-downs and thrift store finds. Is “book hoarder” a style? Our house also looks like a school room with maps and a timeline in the dining room. After a little Google searching, our home style is “eclectic light (or perhaps more mid-tone, between light and dark) academia”. I didn’t know that was a style! Ha!

I didn’t know that was a style either!🤣 I’m a book hoarder, too, though I have downsized some.

Oh I’m LOVING this. Thanks for the shoutout and the glimpse into your decorating style. It’s wonderful. I especially like “my cow and me welcome thee” because of course you do. We have a large framed cow picture hanging in our walk-in closet. I named her Elodie Melody, the Moo Cow. She watches over me as I get dressed.

You’re one up on me! I haven’t named my cows.

Well, this was a fun read! Are your cows sensitive about not having names? I did enjoy seeing them, and frankly, “Hay girl” is worth repeating! I had a cow kitchen back in Texas until I found it no longer Mooving, and switched to my fruit phase, which I carried with me to Mississippi. I put the last of the fruit into a giant fruit salad on my back porch when we renovated the kitchen…which is still waiting for me to empty the bowl and turn the porch into something other than a trash warehouse.

They haven’t lodged any complaints about not having names – yet. We have fruit in our kitchen too! It came with the house. The tile backsplash has fruit on it.

I still have my leftover kitchen fruit tiles…I am not sure why.

Our last house had the “wonderful” 60s pink tile in the master bath. When we remodeled, we ripped it down to the studs. I still have one fully intact pink tile that somehow survived the demo. I also don’t know why.

Bovine chic is hilarious. My house is small and I have destructive creatures. By default, it’s functional but comfy. With some classy furniture handed down by my grandmothers. I like to change the dining room decor seasonally, so I keep the walls and floors neutral.

I always say I’m going swap out some decor seasonally, but I never do.

I follow Ally as well – in fact, Ally’s blog roll is how I discovered you.
These are all such cute cow accessories. I like them all, but the wreath “hay girl” and the cow painting with the flower in its mouth are my favorites. This house with done in Early American furniture and there are a lot of country touches, the kitchen especially. My late mother loved ducks, so there are quite a few ducks around, including a duck wreath, duck plaques and a row of duck decoys on the tops of the kitchen cupboards. I have left the country and duck decor as I like ducks too and we collected them over many years. There was a small country-inspired store we frequented, and the owner bought small carved ducks from a guy that whittled them as a hobby. So they are kind of small, but unique. Whenever we went into a country store, our heads would swivel around looking for ducks. 🙂 P.S. – we have a few rooster decorations in the kitchen as well.

My dad used to have some duck decoys. I have no idea what happened to them.🤷♀️

Some of them look very realistic. There are ducks and geese in various rooms. Then there is me with my teddy bear collection started years ago but haven’t added any in almost 20 years.

You’d feel right at home in Wisconsin!
My decorating style is retro. A bit of Mid-Century Modern crossed with The Brady Bunch and a splash of The Jetsons for good measure.

Wisconsin is still on our list of states to visit. We may be visiting Wisconsin and Michigan this fall if our plans work out.

Fall is a lovely time, too! Try to plan it for mid-October if you can. That’s maximum foliage time.
