I’m hopping into my time machine for this week’s post. All of the trials and tribulations poor Suzassippi has encountered during the renovations of her home (especially her recent painting perils) brought this memory to mind.
Many years ago, we decided to paint the dining room at our last house. We had even gone so far as to buy a powered paint roller which was actually kind of neat. It consisted of a bucket into which to pour the paint which was then pumped through a tube and into the roller so that you could paint continuously without constantly needing to stop and reload the roller. It also had a handy shoulder strap for easy carrying. The whole contraption worked great… until it didn’t.

Using the power roller was a one person job so I was in the dining room merrily painting away while Kenn was somewhere else. Meanwhile, I was blissfully unaware that the vibration from the pumping process was slowly loosening the seal. (Duhn, duhn, duhn.) I learned what was happening only when the bucket plunged to the floor with no warning. The impact caused a lovely spray of light blue paint to arc out of the bucket, across the dining room, into the living room, and onto the couch. I was still standing there staring in stunned disbelief when my loving husband walked into the room, surveyed the scene, and asked, in all seriousness, “What did you do that for?” Y’all, I love my husband, but he was lucky I didn’t throw the remainder of the paint on him at that point. Probably the only thing that saved him was the thought of having an even bigger mess to clean up. (Painting is also now a project that I do alone, LOL.)
What are some of your home improvement mishaps? And, what did you do that for?π
I’ve always wondered about those power rollers. Last time we had a big paint job, we just hired someone. π

We’d probably hire someone for a big job, too. After a couple more attempts, I decided the power roller was too much trouble and went back to a manual roller. Thanks for stopping by!

OMG. Kenn had a close call there.

He really did. I’m not sure he ever understood just how close it was.

I wish I knew a power roller existed last year, when we repainted pretty much every room in our new house! I’d take the gamble to save all that time.

For a multi-room project, I might be willing to try a power roller again. A new and improved version, of course.

You’re right – Kenn is lucky he wasn’t wearing the paint after that! We got steel doors on the front and side doors back in the mid-80s. They were gray, already primed, but we bought paint to match our new siding in colonial blue. It was gel paint, something I’d never used before. Over Memorial Day weekend, I figured I had three days, enough to paint the first day, then paint the last day of the holiday. My mom offered to help as she said “I’ve seen you painting the garage door – your touch is not light enough, just use a light coat.” Hmm. Well if that was my problem, or it was since I used gel paint, the paint would not dry and I had to close the door but didn’t want to smudge anything, so I slept in the kitchen, on the floor, as I had to leave both the front and side doors ajar with just the screen door locked. I sure wouldn’t do that these days. Finally, it dried enough, but not completely, so I put wax paper along each side and a week later it finally dried – whew!

I’ve never heard of gel paint. We’re planning to repaint our front door soon. I’m not looking forward to the process.

I don’t blame you – the side door wasn’t bad as it had no decorations, but the front door had square trim around two fleurettes … so you couldn’t masking tape it off, so very dainty brush strokes around the white fleurettes. I’ve not painted it since. π
